Originally built in 1910, we renovated this 4 bedroom Victorian house to create a modern space that has the warmth and charm of a period home. This involved reinstating large profile skirting boards, arches, cornices and ceiling roses to the front part of the house, while adding features to the outside including a bullnose veranda, lacework, window mouldings and timber sash windows. The modern extension at the rear of the house offers a light filled open-plan living space.

This double story house was a new build, consisting of three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open plan living area. The exterior is made up of Colorbond Standing Seam cladding and timber.
Earth-sheltered house, Whittlesea
This unique earth-sheltered house was featured on Grand Designs Australia 2023. With concrete walls, floor and roof, it has been built to withstand bushfires. Floor to ceiling glass windows take advantage of its beautiful surrounds while insulating against cold and heat. The floorplan consists of four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and an open plan kitchen and living area linking to a three-car garage. The internal walls support massive precast concrete beams that form a curved feature ceiling. On top of the beams, a reinforced concrete slab is covered in a waterproof membrane, insulation, drainage cells and sand. The entire house is covered with a half-metre deep layer of soil that will keep temperatures to 17-23 degrees and allow grass fires to pass right over the roof.

Our renovation to this Art Deco home included adding a third bedroom and second bathroom by creating an upstairs retreat within the existing roof structure, completed with matching walk-in-robes and an ensuite. Throughout the house we laid engineered solid timber floorboards complementing a new kitchen, laundry and bathroom. Sliding doors were installed from the new kitchen, leading to an updated outdoor area including a new deck and garden. We also landscaped the front yard and added a driveway.

"I'm so pleased with my apartment renovation and couldn't speak more highly of the team at Tricastle Construction. John and Paul worked tirelessly to deliver very high finishes and all within budget and on time. They were great to deal with throughout the entire process, guiding me on how to achieve the best outcome which was really helpful for a first time renovator." Samantha, Elsternwick.
